Authentic Hand-Turned Dapa (Burl Wood Bowl)
“The Dapa is the most beloved wooden craft of Bhutan. Hand-turned by master artisans primarily from the Trashiyangtse region, these bowls are carved from special burls (known as Zaa) found on maple or oak trees.
What makes a Dapa truly special is the two-part design—a lid and a base—that fit together with perfect precision. In Bhutanese culture, these bowls are symbols of hospitality and are traditionally used to serve rice and curries. Because they are made from natural burl wood, no two bowls are ever the same; the unique grain and ‘eyes’ in the wood make each piece a one-of-a-kind work of art. They are durable, heat-resistant, and become more beautiful with age.”
Unlike factory-made versions, this Gho is hand-woven on a traditional loom, characterized by its intricate supplementary warp patterns. It represents the strength and cultural identity of the Bhutanese people. To wear a hand-woven Gho of this quality is a mark of prestige and respect for tradition. It is designed to be folded and tied at the waist to create a unique pouch (the largest pocket in the world) for carrying everyday items.”
